CO2 Laser Recovery, Day by Day: The Honest Timeline

The question we are asked most about CO2 resurfacing is not what it costs. It is "how long will I look like this?" Below is what recovery generally looks like after full-face fractional CO2 at our Essendon clinic. CoolPeel follows the same pattern compressed into a fraction of the time.

Everyone heals at their own pace. Treat this as a map, not a promise, and follow the specific aftercare your therapist gives you over anything you read online.

Day 0 — the day of treatment

Your skin will feel hot, much like strong sunburn, and look red and slightly swollen. That heat sensation settles over the first few hours. Plan a quiet evening. Sleep slightly propped up if you can, and keep your hands off your face.

Days 1–2 — the red, swollen phase

This is usually the peak. Redness is obvious, and you may notice puffiness, particularly around the eyes in the mornings. The skin starts to feel tight. You will apply your recovery products frequently and keep the skin comfortable rather than trying to speed anything up. No actives, no exfoliants, no makeup.

Most people take these two days off or work from home.

Days 3–5 — dryness and fine shedding

The redness begins to settle into a bronzed look, and the surface turns dry and sandpapery before flaking away in fine pieces. This is the treated skin coming off to reveal the new surface underneath, and it is the part people find hardest to leave alone.

Do not pick, scrub or help it along. Picking is the main cause of the two complications we want to avoid: pigmentation and scarring. Let it shed on its own schedule.

Days 5–7 — back to normal life

Most people are comfortable in public around here. Shedding is largely finished, and what remains is pink, fresh, slightly sensitive skin. Many people can wear light mineral makeup from about day seven, but check with your therapist first.

Week 2 — pink fading, glow arriving

Pinkness fades gradually. Skin often looks noticeably smoother and brighter by now, which is the part people post about. Keep it simple: gentle cleanser, moisturiser, and SPF 50+ every single morning.

Weeks 4 to 12 — where the real result comes from

The visible healing is over long before the work is finished. Collagen remodelling continues quietly for around three months, so texture and scarring keep improving well after you stop thinking about the treatment. If you are assessing whether CO2 was worth it, judge at the three-month mark, not at two weeks.

The aftercare that actually matters

  • SPF 50+ daily, without exception. New skin is vulnerable, and sun exposure in the weeks after treatment is the fastest way to trigger pigmentation and waste the result.
  • No picking or exfoliating. Let the shedding finish on its own.
  • Pause your actives. Retinol, acids and vitamin C go back in only when we tell you.
  • Keep it hydrated. Apply your recovery moisturiser as often as instructed — comfortable skin heals better.
  • Skip heat. No saunas, hot yoga or heavy workouts while the skin is actively healing.

When to call us

Ring us on 0450 000 083 if you see spreading redness with increasing pain after the first few days, any yellow crusting or discharge, blistering, or a fever. These are uncommon, but we want to hear about them early rather than late. Ordinary redness, dryness and flaking on the timeline above are expected and not a cause for concern.

Planning your treatment around your life

The clients who are happiest with CO2 are the ones who booked it at the right time: not before a wedding, not before a holiday somewhere sunny, and not in a fortnight where they cannot avoid being seen. Our Melbourne autumn and winter months tend to be the easiest for recovery, simply because the sun is less of a factor.

Read more about the treatment on our CO2 laser page, see how CoolPeel compares or what it costs, or book a free skin consultation to talk through timing.

Individual results and healing times vary. This is general information, not medical advice. Always follow the aftercare provided by your treating therapist.
