Microneedling vs Salmon DNA Microneedling: What's the Difference, and Which One Is Right for You?

anti-ageingJun 9, 20267 min read

Most clients ask us this question at some point: what's the difference between microneedling and salmon DNA microneedling, and which one should I have? The two treatments share the same delivery method, a controlled depth of micro-injuries to the skin to trigger collagen, but the active ingredient infused at the same time changes the result. Standard microneedling triggers your own collagen. Salmon DNA microneedling adds polynucleotides that hydrate, repair, and noticeably speed up the cell renewal process.

The short answer: both work. Which one is right for you depends on what your skin needs, how much downtime you can tolerate, and what stage of life your skin is in. The longer answer is below.

What microneedling actually does

A microneedling pen contains a cluster of fine surgical needles that move at speed to create thousands of tiny channels in the skin's surface. These channels are too small to draw meaningful blood and they close within hours, but the body interprets them as an injury and starts a cascade of repair. The most important part of that cascade is new collagen and elastin production, which continues for around 12 weeks after the treatment.

The result, over a course of treatments, is firmer skin, smoother texture, less visible scarring, smaller-looking pores, and a generally healthier-looking complexion. We have been using standard microneedling at Aura Skin Boutique for years and it remains one of the most reliable single tools we have for genuine structural skin improvement.

What microneedling does not do, on its own, is hydrate or brighten quickly. The visible glow you might see immediately after the appointment is mostly increased blood flow. The real benefits arrive over weeks.

For more on the standalone treatment, see our microneedling page.

What salmon DNA microneedling adds

Salmon DNA microneedling uses the same micro-channel creation but applies a purified salmon DNA serum to the skin at the same time. This serum is rich in polynucleotides, which are chains of nucleotides extracted and purified from salmon DNA. Polynucleotides have become one of the more interesting actives in regenerative skincare over the last few years.

When you apply polynucleotides to freshly micro-channelled skin, they penetrate efficiently. Once inside, they support cellular repair, increase the skin's water-holding capacity, and accelerate the collagen response that microneedling has already kicked off. The visible difference is that salmon DNA microneedling delivers a dewy, plumped, brighter look much faster than standard microneedling, while still producing the same long-term collagen benefits.

The technique sometimes goes by other names. You may have read about "PDRN microneedling" or "polynucleotide microneedling". These refer to the same family of treatments. At Aura Skin Boutique we use the term salmon DNA microneedling because that is the active we work with, and it is clearer for clients than the chemical name.

See our salmon DNA microneedling page for the full protocol.

The key difference, in one line

Standard microneedling triggers your skin to rebuild itself. Salmon DNA microneedling triggers the same rebuild and hands the skin the raw materials to do it faster.

What each treatment is best for

Standard microneedling is a good fit if your main concerns are:

  • Acne scarring, especially atrophic (indented) scars.
  • Visible pores.
  • General loss of skin texture or firmness.
  • Stretch marks (we offer microneedling for the body too).
  • Older skin where the goal is structural collagen support.

Salmon DNA microneedling is a better fit if your main concerns are:

  • Dehydration that does not respond to topical hyaluronic acid alone.
  • Dull, fatigued skin that needs a real reset.
  • Fine lines without deep scarring.
  • Post-summer or post-event skin recovery.
  • Sensitive skin types that may benefit from the calming, repairing effect of polynucleotides.

There is overlap. We often combine them in a treatment plan, particularly for clients in their 30s and 40s who want both the long-term structural benefit and the immediate glow.

What each treatment feels like

For both, we apply a numbing cream first. The sensation is described as a light vibration with mild prickling, particularly around the bonier parts of the face (forehead, jawline). Most clients rate it 3-4 out of 10. The salmon DNA serum cools the skin during application, which makes the treatment slightly more comfortable than standard microneedling.

Each appointment takes around 60 minutes, including the numbing wait time, the treatment itself, and post-care.

Downtime and recovery

This is where the two treatments differ most visibly to people around you.

Standard microneedling. Skin looks pink and flushed for 24 hours, like a mild sunburn. Some clients develop very fine flaking on day 2 or 3, particularly across the nose and forehead. You can return to work and normal activities the next day. Makeup is fine from day 2.

Salmon DNA microneedling. Less visible recovery. The skin still looks pink immediately after, but it settles faster, often within hours. The salmon DNA polynucleotides have a calming effect that reduces post-treatment inflammation. Most clients are back to normal the same evening.

For both, sunscreen is non-negotiable for the week after, and we ask you to skip retinols and strong acids for five days.

When do you see results?

Standard microneedling: the surface looks slightly fresher straight away, but the meaningful improvements develop between weeks 4 and 12. This is because collagen production peaks around six weeks after treatment.

Salmon DNA microneedling: visible hydration and glow within 48 hours. Brightness peaks at day 7. The collagen benefits develop on the same timeline as standard microneedling, so by week 6, both treatments are doing similar work underneath the surface. The difference is what you see on the surface in the first fortnight.

How they fit into a treatment plan

We usually space microneedling sessions 4-6 weeks apart and recommend a course of three to six treatments depending on the concern. For acne scarring we go longer, often six to eight sessions over a year.

A common rhythm in our clinic is:

  • Month 1: salmon DNA microneedling for the immediate brighten and to start the collagen response.
  • Month 2: standard microneedling at a slightly deeper depth for structural work.
  • Month 3: salmon DNA again.
  • Continue alternating, with HydraFacial or LED therapy in between weeks for maintenance.

For most clients in their 30s to 50s with mixed concerns, this alternating pattern outperforms doing either treatment alone.

If you have not had microneedling before with us, we will usually suggest starting with salmon DNA microneedling for the first session because the recovery is gentler. Once your skin has tolerated that, we can confidently work at a deeper depth on the next session.

Which one is right for you?

If you are coming to us for the first time and your skin is generally healthy but tired, dull, or dehydrated, salmon DNA microneedling is where to start.

If you have specific structural concerns like acne scarring, deep texture, or genuine loss of firmness, standard microneedling is the right tool. We may build a course over six months.

If you are not sure, book a consultation. Twenty minutes with one of our therapists is more useful than reading about it. We will look at your skin properly and recommend a plan based on what your skin actually needs, not what looks impressive on paper.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know which treatment is right for me?

If you are coming to us for the first time and your skin is generally healthy but dull or dehydrated, salmon DNA microneedling is where to start. If you have specific structural concerns like acne scarring or significant loss of firmness, standard microneedling is the better tool. A 20-minute consultation in clinic will tell us more than reading can.

How many sessions of either treatment do I need?

Is salmon DNA microneedling vegan?

No. The polynucleotide active is derived from salmon. We mention this clearly because clients who follow a vegan lifestyle often want to know. We can suggest polynucleotide alternatives from plant-based sources if this is important to you.

How many sessions of either treatment do I need?

For maintenance and overall skin health, three sessions spaced 4-6 weeks apart is the standard recommendation. For acne scarring or deeper structural concerns, six to eight sessions over six to twelve months is more realistic.

Can I combine microneedling with other treatments?

Yes, with sensible spacing. HydraFacial and LED light therapy pair particularly well in the weeks between microneedling sessions. We space microneedling at least four weeks away from chemical peels and from injectable treatments.

Can men have these treatments?

Absolutely. Microneedling is one of the most popular treatments among our male clients, particularly for refining skin texture, reducing congestion, and addressing early signs of ageing without anything that visibly looks like a cosmetic treatment.

Are there any reasons I should not have these treatments?

Both treatments are not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding, if you are on Roaccutane or have been in the last six months, or if you have active eczema, dermatitis, or a cold sore breakout on the treatment area. We discuss medical history at consultation.

How long do the results last?

The collagen induced by microneedling continues to develop for around 12 weeks after each session, then gradually settles into your baseline skin. To maintain results, most clients return every two to three months once they have completed an initial course.

Does salmon DNA microneedling smell like fish?

No, and this is the most common worry clients raise. The salmon DNA serum is highly purified, has no scent of its own, and we apply it under our standard skincare workflow. There is no fishy smell during or after the treatment.
